Crucifixion

We knock off early on a Friday
and we always go straight to the pub—
just a couple of halves on the way home.

It turned into a bit more that day
because Wendy had got engaged—finally!—
to Darren and we wanted to celebrate.

We were singing as we walked home
I’m getting married in the morning—
like grandad used to sing at the allotment.

On the road by the Shell garage there was
another bloke strung up. No idea what he’d done.
Some women were weeping. So loud!

We stopped singing. The sky went red
then black, thunder cracked above our heads.
We ran. Poor bloke. I felt bad for Wendy too.
